How to Fill Out a Student Financial Aid Master Promissory Note

If you have filled out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will need to complete a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note agreeing to a customized financial plan set to your specific financial needs as a student. Allow at least 30 to 45 minutes to complete the required document. After you have filled out the Master Promissory Note, your school will notify you of the loan type and loan amount you are eligible to receive. You may cancel your loan or request a lower amount by contacting your school.

      Go to the U.S. government's Student Loans website.

      Click on the green "Sign In" icon in the left center of the screen. You will have to enter your Social Security number, the first two characters of your last name, your date of birth and your Department of Education PIN number. Click on "Sign In."

      Click on "Complete Master Promissory Note" in the middle column.

      Enter your identifying information, as well as information about the school you plan to attend. Once all required fields are complete, click on "Continue."

      Provide two references. These must be adults with different U.S. addresses, and you need to have known them for at least three years. Click on "Continue."

      Read each section of the Terms and Conditions before proceeding to the next step. Once you have read the information, check the box that states "I have reviewed the information...." Click on "Continue."

      Review the information you previously entered. If all information is correct, enter your first name, middle initial and last name to electronically sign your Master Promissory Note. Click on "Sign."

      Review your signed Master Promissory Note by clicking on "Continue." You will now be able to view and save your completed Master Promissory Note in your computer as a PDF file.
