How to Transfer Student Financial Aid

When you transfer colleges, you want to keep your financial aid benefits, as a lapse in funds could prevent you from successfully completing the year at your new school. Fortunately. the federal financial aid program, FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, allows you to transfer your financial aid package to your new school by simply filling out a new FASFA prior to the new academic year. If you are transferring in the middle of the year, you will need to change the school code list on the current year's FAFSA application.

  1. Mid-Year Transfer

      Login to your FAFSA account online to change your school code. Select "Make correction to a processed FAFSA." Be prepared to enter your new school's code. You get can the code by calling your new school's financial aid office or from the list on the FAFSA website.

      Contact your state-level financial aid agency to transfer any state-level grants to your new school. For example, Pennsylvania college students receive grants from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Alternatively, New York students receive tuition assistance grants from the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation.

      Submit your current school's transcripts to your new school registrar's office. Additionally, visit the financial aid office at your new school and inquire about any specific forms that the campus requires to process your financial aid. For example, you may need to submit account information to receive your funds, or submit credit information to the financial aid office. Be sure to comply with all deadlines listed on any form given to you.

      Contact your former school's financial aid office to cancel any financial aid you received. Make sure that their financial office is aware that you are transferring to a new school.

      Review your Student Aid Report, SAR, once your financial aid package is processed. You will received the SAR a few week after submitting the application. If some of your aid is missing, contact your school's financial aid office without delay.

    Transfer at the End of the Academic Year

      File a new federal FAFSA. Be prepared to enter your financial information and enter your new school's FAFSA code. You can obtain the code from your school's financial aid office.
