How to Apply for Ohio Student Aid

Financial aid in Ohio is given to persons enrolled in accredited colleges or universities who fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, otherwise known as the FAFSA. Some forms of Ohio financial aid are need-based, meaning it's only given to students who show great financial need. Government aid is available to any student and, with the exception of grants, must be repaid upon leaving school. No financial aid is awarded in Ohio without first filling out the FAFSA.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to access the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. There are options for completing the form either online or by hand. This form is required to be filed before any financial aid is awarded to you.

    • 2

Provide your personal information, student information, school information, financial information, tax information and your parents' financial information (if you are a dependent on their income tax return) on your FAFSA. Review your application and submit it electronically or mail it to the address listed on the form.

    • 3

View your student aid results once your FAFSA is received and processed by the federal government. Your SAR results will outline how much of your estimated tuition and fees is your personal responsibility. Your FAFSA results are then sent to the educational facility in which you are enrolled or are planning to enroll, and you will be notified about the amount and type of student aid you are eligible for in the state of Ohio.

    • 4

Apply for additional student aid by speaking with the admissions office at your college or university about scholarships, grants and other aid available for persons with your specific FAFSA results. A financial counselor will provide you with applications and information based on your FAFSA results.
