How to Write a Financial Aid Petition

If you have been denied financial aid for college or your financial aid package is not sufficient for you to be able to attend the college of your choice, you may want to write a petition to the university's financial aid office in an effort to get a second chance. Financial aid eligibility in the United States is determined by the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), which may not reveal extenuating financial circumstances that make it difficult for you to meet your contribution requirements. You can also write a petition if your aid has been revoked, even if it was because of poor academic performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Specifically address extenuating circumstances when petitioning for an increase in financial aid. Aid eligibility is determined by earnings from the prior calendar year, which may not reflect your current financial circumstances. Concisely explain any changes in income or additional ongoing expenses that make it hard for you to pay for your education without additional aid.

    • 2

Provide clear justification for unsatisfactory academic performance when petitioning for a reinstatement of financial aid eligibility. If there has been a death in your family, or you were seriously ill or experienced some other event that led to a disruption in your studies, explain that in your letter. Express a commitment to improving academic performance, and include a detailed plan for how you intend to achieve your goals.

Attach appropriate documentation to support your claims, such as a letter from your physician or copies of your wage statements. When applicable, offer to provide additional documentation or clarification.
