How to Reference a Web Page in APA Style Academic Documents

Referencing research sources in American Psychological Association (APA) style of academic writing is not difficult, but the wide range of source types offered in today's technological world can make source citations confusing. Fortunately, the APA is clear on its guidelines, and citing a website is no harder than citing any other academic source.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the author. Look at the top or bottom of the Web page to see if the author is named there. Otherwise, look for page headings like "about" or "maintained by."

    • 2

Find the publication date. This is usually at the bottom of the website, prefaced with a phrase such as "Last updated on." Either the last updated date or the copyright date is acceptable. Use month and day if they are included, or n.d. if no date is given.

    • 3

Note the Web page title. If your citation is for a specific article or sub-page of the main website, list both the main website and the article title or page subtitle.

    • 4

Copy the URL or Web address. If you have printed the page out, it can usually be found on the top right corner; if you are accessing it online, the URL is whatever is in your location bar.

    • 5

Write the elements of the reference using the following format: Author Last Name, First Name. (Date of Publication). Title of Page/Document. Retrieved from URL.
