How to Use Microsoft One Note to Organize Classes

Many schools have everything in an electronic form. The class syllabus, notes, lectures and other information can be given to students via email or platforms such as Blackboard. Instead of carrying around several notebooks and binders around campus, students can use Microsoft One Note to organize and store their class information.

Instructions

    • 1

After purchasing and installing One Note, open it. When you open Microsoft One Note for the first time, there will be several notebooks, sections and pages that are already opened. These are informational notebooks that can help you learn to use One Note. You can go through the information to get a better idea of the features that are available. Once you are finished with these notebooks, you can close them and start out with a blank page.

    • 2

Begin by creating a new notebook. There is a preset notebook titled "Student Semester Notebook". This is a good one to start out with. It has present sections and pages set up for you. You can delete, add or edit information as you go through the notebook.

    • 3

Use the template to help you out. You can follow the template design and create more classes depending on how many classes you have.

    • 4

Replace the current information with your own information. Change the section names to match your classes, clubs and schedule.

    • 5

Use a table to keep track of your schedule. The first section and page of the notebooks is a good place to keep your schedule and important dates.

    • 6

Type your notes right into a One Note page. Many classes require a lot of book work and note taking before you even set foot in your class. You can find good examples on the Internet and insert them in your notes page. Clearly label your notes by chapter to make it easier for yourself later on.

    • 7

Copy your syllabus and other class information into One Note. The first page of each class section is a great place to put your syllabus.

    • 8

Include your professor's information onto another class page. Sometimes professors will have information that is not included on the syllabus that you should remember.

    • 9

Record your lectures with the One Note recording tool. As long as you have a microphone, built in or attached, it should work. You can go back and listen to the lecture at a later time.

    • 10

The "To Do" section is a good way to manage your assignments and projects. You will not longer need a planner if you can maintain this list. You can also create calendars with the tables that are available.

    • 11

If you want to save papers into One Note, you can easily print to One Note. It will open an unfiled page. All you have to do is click and drag it into the correct location. This way, you can have a copy of everything into One Note.

    • 12

Create one notebook for each semester. Create sections for each class, club, etc. Save each semester notebook and you can access this information easily. You will find that there is information that you want to go back to at a later semester.

    • 13

Before you close One Note, you should click on the "To Do" list. This is a good way to remind yourself of everything that you have to do. When you open One Note again, it automatically opens to the notebooks that you have been viewing. One Note automatically saves your information.
