Designate a different color notebook for each subject your child has in school. Look at your child's school schedule or take into account how many class periods he has in a school day, and purchase the corresponding number of notebooks. Write the subject on the cover in a bottom or top corner with a permanent marker. He will get used to grabbing a certain color notebook for particular class, but writing the name of the subject on it will help starting out.
Stick a tab on each dividing pocket page in the three-subject or five-subject notebooks. Write "Homework," "Notes" and "Projects" on the slips of paper that came with the divider tabs and insert them into the clear plastic tabs. This will help the child keep better track of his notes and papers.
Label two three-ring binders "morning classes" and "afternoon classes," or color coordinate them so that the child knows, for example, the blue binder is for morning classes and the black one is for afternoon classes. Open the binder rings and place the child's folders and notebooks for his morning classes and afternoon classes in the appropriate binder. This will keep him organized and save him time from running to his locker between every class.
