How to Write A Bibliography for Books in the MLA Format

Bibliographies are a necessity for academic papers. They let the writer document the sources he used in compiling the arguments that have been put forth in the paper. The Modern Language Association (MLA) style is widely used in the humanities, in academic fields such as language as literature. MLA style allows for brief parenthetical citations in text, and the bibliography, called the works cited, gives the reader further information about the documents that have been cited.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a page break in your document after the conclusion of your paper.

    • 2

Create a "Works Cited" by listing the sources you used in alphabetical order based on the last name of each author.

    • 3

List the author's name, last then first. Place a period after the name.

    • 4

List the name of the book and underline it. Place a period after the book title.

    • 5

List the place in which the book was published, starting with city and then state. You can find this information on the title page in the first few pages of the book. Place a colon after the state abbreviation.

    • 6

List the publisher's name after the colon, and then place a comma.

    • 7

List the year of publication for the edition of the book. Place a period after the year. Hit enter to go to a new line, and repeat these steps for all the books you used as sources in your paper.

    • 8

Format the bibliography by selecting all of the text in your "Works Cited" and changing the indentation of the paragraphs to "Hanging." This will give the first lines no indentation and every line after an indentation of 1/2 inch.
