To What Colleges Can You Go to Become a Chef?

Taking the first step along any career path is difficult. Fortunately, if you're goal is to become a chef, there is a huge range of schools that can help your professional and personal goals.
  1. Culinary Institute of America

    • The Culinary Institute of America is one of the two principal culinary institutions in the U.S. The school has locations in New York, California, Texas and Singapore, and graduates receive a bachelor's of professional studies in culinary administration.

    The Cordon Bleu

    • The Cordon Bleu is the second of the principal culinary institutes in America. The institute is a worldwide organization and boasts graduates such as Julia Childs. The school offers bachelor's and master's programs as well as professional certificates. Campuses can be found all over the U.S. and Europe, and degree offerings vary from campus to campus.

    Options

    • Another option for aspiring chefs is a bachelor's degree in hospitality or hotel administration and management. If the program does not offer a designated culinary concentration, then you can obtain additional certificates from culinary institutes. Some hospitality/hotel administration and management programs include Cornell University, New York University, Rochester Institute of Technology and Boston University. Some universities offer bachelor's programs specifically in culinary arts.

    Considerations

    • Technical and community colleges offer a wide range of classes in the culinary arts. Art Institutes also frequently have special culinary programs. Degrees upon completion vary from program to program, and not all are recognized as accredited. Ask your local technical or community college what programs are available by you.
