Alabama Welding & Soldering Schools

According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, job requests in the welding and soldering field are expected to remain steady (and in some case experience a slight decline) through 2018. The work involves splitting and joining parts such as pipes through the operation of heavy machinery. Achieving a position in welding and soldering involves training though certificate programs.

    • Alabama Southern Community College offers a two-year certificate program in welding with three areas of concentration: basic plate welding, cutting and gouging and pipe welding. Students gain experience working in simulation labs, reading blueprints plus grinding, oxyacetylene cutting, plasma cutting, carbon arc gouging and using Tungsten inert gas. Applicants must be of age 16 or older; a high school diploma or GED is not required. Students without those qualifications will take an ability test. Alabama Southern Community College offers financial aid such as grants, work study, scholarships and veterans' assistance.

    Wallace Community College

    • Students at Wallace Community College train for one of two certificates (one is three semesters long, the other adds an additional semester of study) in the field of welding, taking coursework including flux cored welding, groove lab, carbon pipe lab, industrial blueprint reading, stainless pipe lab, gas tungsten arc welding theory and groove theory. A high school diploma or GED is not required; students will take aptitude tests before entrance. Books and tools must be purchased separately. Athletic-minded students may take part in Wallace's baseball or softball teams. The school also offers honor societies, student government, a choir, theater group and an art club. Students resources include a learning center, counseling (academic, career and personal) and a testing facility.

    Gadsden State Community College

    • Gadsden State Community College offers a two-year certificate program in welding technology. Students take classes such as consumable welding processes, shielded metal arc welding groove lab, certification theory, boiler tube theory, boiler tube lab, stainless pipe lab, pipefitting and fabrication and blueprint reading for fabrications. A variety of general education requirements such as math, oral communication, public speaking and English are required. Minimum applicant age is 16 years old. While on campus, students may join the Gadsden State Singers, Gadsden State Show Band, honor societies, bowling team, athletics, information technology club, cheerleading and dance team. The school offers counseling, veterans' assistance, financial aid, career placement, first aid training and academic tutoring.
