Allied Health Schools

Allied health professions include paramedics, personal trainers, medical coders, ultrasound technicians and speech, respiratory and physical therapists. Allied health careers usually requires specialized training that can be gained through one or two years of college education, although a four-year degree sometimes may be required.

    • The University of Texas's Southwestern School of Health Professions offers allied health programs for those seeking careers as radiation therapists physical therapists or clinical dietitians. The school is affiliated with Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, and admission requirements are higher than those of many other schools. Most programs requires students to have a bachelor's degree in a related field, meet a minimum grade-point average, and submit letters of recommendation. The school does have its own bachelor's of science degree programs in medical laboratory sciences and radiation therapy. There also is a certificate program in emergency medicine, which provides training for paramedics and emergency medical technicians.

    Apollo College

    • Apollo College has locations across the western United States. The campuses offer programs and courses in radiology, pharmacy technology, physical therapy, fitness training and medical billing and coding. Apollo College is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools and students are eligible for federal financial aid (see references 2). Apollo also offers online courses that can lead to a bachelor's degree in medical imaging and respiratory care for those who have prior training in these fields.

    Sanford-Brown College

    • Sanford-Brown College has locations primarily in the southern, northern and northeastern United States. The schools offer programs in medical billing and coding, health information management, emergency medical services, surgical technology and occupational therapy. All prospective students have to submit a statement of health and complete an in-person interview before being admitted, along with submitting the application, proof of graduation from high school (or equivalent) and financial aid forms (see references 3)
