Technical Trade Schools in Atlanta

Recent high school graduates in Atlanta who are not interested in a traditional college experience but want to acquire marketable skills can enroll in one of the city’s technical trade schools. Programs at the schools are offered in a wide variety of fields. Unions and trade industry organizations sponsor school programs and give students the opportunity to jump start their careers with apprenticeships offered through technical schools.

    • The Center of Industry and Technology is a technical training school that offers certificates and customized programs for companies. CIT specializes in welding, maintenance and computer software. Its welding programs last five to 14 weeks and meet requirements of the Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission. CIT’s maintenance classes cover 10 areas and include specialties such as carpentry, electrical wiring, refrigeration, air conditioning and plumbing. Students can also sit for Environmental Protection Agency certification exams at CIT. Computer training classes are offered in the Microsoft Office suite of programs. Financial aid and job placement assistance is available, and laid-off workers and veterans may apply for special financial assistance programs.

    Atlanta Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee

    • Atlanta Electrical JATC is an official union training school for electrical employees. JATC centers around the nation are responsible for apprenticeship and training programs for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). The Atlanta Electrical JATC offers four specialties for those interested in careers in the electrical industry: outside lineman, inside wireman, installer technician and residential wireman. Eligibility requirements include a high school diploma, minimum age of 18, a passing score on an aptitude test, and one year of high school algebra. Students are paid during apprenticeships and are eligible for tool discounts.

    Mechanical Trades Institute

    • Mechanical Trades Institute is a trade school offering programs in heating and air conditioning, pipe fitting and plumbing. It is an official training center for the Plumbers, Pipefitters and Service Technicians Union. Founded in 1936, the school is sponsored by the union and the local Mechanical Industries Council. Tuition is free. Students choose a specialty and enroll in a five-year work-study program that combines classroom instruction with job experience alongside experienced journeymen. Students are eligible for union benefits and receive a stipend. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, pass a drug test, take an aptitude test and have a valid driver license. Accepted students are on probation during their first year. MTI is also a state-accredited exam site for recertification.
