Indiana Gunsmithing Schools

A gunsmith is someone who makes, repairs, designs and even crafts firearms. According to Technical Schools Guide, "there are many opportunities for gunsmithers, including work in sporting goods stores, firearm manufacturers and custom gunsmithing shops." However, in order to gain those jobs, gunsmith candidates must first undergo training at one of the various technical schools across the U.S. to gain a degree, usually in mechanical engineering. There are several such schools in Indiana.
  1. Indiana University

    • Indiana University is located in Bloomington, Indiana. DiplomaGuide states that Indiana University offers several academic courses of study that would benefit an aspiring gunsmith, including mechanic and repair technology, precision systems service and repair and maintenance repair.

    Ivy Tech Community College-Central Indiana

    • Located in Indianapolis, this school prides itself on affordable education. According to the school's website, a student can gain a degree in two years for a cost of $3,000 per year. Its mechanical engineering technology program will give its students an associate degree.

    Purdue University

    • Located in West Lafayette, Indiana, Purdue University's School of Technology offers a major in mechanical engineering technology. The school's website states that students are "job-ready" after two years of full-time study and can elect to continue their education for another two years to earn a B.S. degree.

    Vincennes University

    • Vincennes University is located in Vincennes, Indiana. According to its website, it offers only the first two years of a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering before transferring the student to Purdue University. Its program includes summer courses and prepares the student for advance study.
