The Top Engineering Universities in the Nation

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings named California Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Princeton University and the University of California Berkeley as the top engineering universities in the U.S., as of September 2010. These prestigious institutes were also ranked as the top five in the world. If you are setting your sights on a highly rated engineering university, one of these five should be your first choice.
  1. California Institute of Technology

    • This institute was ranked as the number one engineering and technology university in "The Times Higher Education World University Rankings." Located in Pasadena, the engineering division has 90 full-time faculty and over 1,000 students. Departments include Aerospace; Applied Physics and Materials Science; Bioengineering; Computing and Mathematical Sciences; Electrical Engineering; Environmental Science and Engineering; and Mechanical and Civil Engineering.

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • Engineering has been taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since it was founded in 1861 in Cambridge. There are eight departments in the engineering division of MIT--Aeronautics and Astronautics; Biological Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; Materials Science and Engineering; Nuclear Science and Engineering; and Mechanical Engineering. There are roughly 4,700 engineering students and 370 faculty members.

    Stanford University

    • Since Leland Stanford founded the university in 1891, engineering has been a fundamental part of Stanford's education. Stanford's engineering division has 240 faculty members and 4,000 students. It is made up of nine departments: Aeronautics and Astronautics; Bioengineering; Chemical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Computer Science; Management Science and Engineering; and Materials Science and Engineering.

    Princeton University

    • Princeton University's School of Engineering and Applied Science consists of six departments: Chemical and Biological Engineering; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; Operations Research and Financial Engineering; and Computer Science. The school has 130 faculty members and 1,380 engineering students.

    University of California Berkeley

    • Engineering was one of the first colleges of the University of California Berkley when it was established in 1868. Today, the College of Engineering is made up of seven departments: Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Nuclear Engineering; Materials Science and Engineering; Industrial Engineering and Operations Research; and Bioengineering. There are 216 full-time faculty and 4,345 students.
