Cambridge University has the top engineering program in Europe. It is one of three top-ranked engineering universities in Great Britain that regularly tops lists like those compiled in 2009 by the "Times Higher Education Supplement." TopUniversities.com ranked Cambridge as the world's second-best university in 2009 and the No. 4 engineering institution in the world. The school offers degrees at all levels, from a bachelor's degree through a Ph.D. Research at the university is classified according to three major themes: sustainable development, engineering for life science and cognitive systems engineering. The school is home to five major research centers such as the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics and the Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, or ETH Zurich, is also among the world's most prestigious engineering universities. Although not as highly rated as the other U.K. institution on the "Times Higher Education" top-10 list (Imperial College, London, ranked No. 6), it is the highest ranked institution in Europe outside of the U.K. at which to study engineering (TopUniversities.com ranked the program No. 10). Also offering degrees at all levels, ETH Zurich offers students an opportunity to study nearly every area of engineering as well. Engineering studies are divided among two major divisions within the university. The architecture and civil engineering division encompasses studies in architecture, spatial development and infrastructure systems, civil and environmental engineering and geomatic engineering and planning. The engineering science division encompasses 11 fields of study including robotics, systems and control, micro and nano systems and engineering science and technology.
