MIT is consistently ranked as the number one engineering university worldwide by "US News and World Report". The institute offers undergrad and graduate programs in engineering as well as professional courses for adults already in the field. The admissions process to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is, obviously very competitive. The basic academic requirements to be even considered for admission into MIT are (in high school) one year of physics, one year of chemistry and biology, calculus, two years of a foreign language and social science and four years of English (literature or composition). Involvement in extracurricular activities, such as science fairs, enrichment and summer programs, Olympiads, and courses with college credit taken before application all help the applicant. Of nearly 16,000 freshman applicants in 2009, only 10 percent were admitted. i.e. 1,675. There is financial aid available through MIT as well as career placement and counseling.

Like many universities with a school of engineering, students interested in the Stanford engineering program are encouraged to apply to the university as a whole, rather than apply specifically to the school of engineering. Within the Stanford engineering program and as of the 2009 school year, there are 132 professors, 37 associate professors, 53 assistant professors, and 19 non-tenured faculty members. The program has been recognized by distinguished organizations and bodies such as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Institute of Medicine, just to name a few of the prestigious organizations. Financial aid is available through the university as well as a career placement center and graduate programs in engineering.
