Colleges in Ohio That Offer Architectural Landscaping

Landscape architects assess social, ecological and geological conditions to design outdoor and public spaces such as parks and residence landscapes and gardens. The Board of Landscape Architect Examiners regulates the practice of landscape architecture in the state of Ohio and is responsible for licensing architects. The board requires candidates to have a degree in landscape architecture from an institution accredited by the Landscape Architecture Accrediting Board. There is only one accredited college in Ohio as of 2011, with several others within 75 miles.
  1. Ohio State University

    • The Knowlton School of Architecture at Ohio State University offers programs in landscape architecture at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 2010, the school's undergraduate offering -- the Bachelor's of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA) -- ranked ninth nationally according to a report in the magazine Design Intelligence. Additionally, the Knowlton School offers two Masters of Landscape Architecture (MLA) degrees. The MLA I is designed for individuals without prior training in the field, while the MLA II offers students with an undergraduate degree in landscape architecture the chance to advance their knowledge of the field.

    University of Michigan

    • Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan -- approximately 50 miles from Toledo, Ohio -- the University of Michigan offers an accredited MLA program. The three-year program prepares students for a career in landscape architecture through classroom and studio experience. Students have the option of completing either a traditional thesis or an interdisciplinary, team-based master's project. The school also offers post-professional advanced degrees (MLA and Ph.D.) for students who have already completed an accredited program.

    Ball State University

    • Ball State University, just outside of Indianapolis, Indiana, grants two accredited degrees -- the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) and the MLA. According to Design Intelligence, the undergraduate program at Ball State ranks eighth nationally, while the graduate program ranks fifth. Students from all backgrounds can apply to Ball State University's MLA program as it can be tailored to meet the student's academic and accreditation requirements. The Landscape Architecture Department at Ball State offers several departmental scholarships for students pursuing either the BLA or MLA.

    West Virginia University

    • Boasting a near 100 percent employment rate among its graduates, the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design at West Virginia University offers room for 50 first-year students to its BSLA program each year. The program focuses on hand and computer drafting and design and students are required to submit portfolios for review before advancing from sophomore to junior standing. The school also provides a graduate studies program; however, as of 2011 it is not accredited.
