Culinary Arts Schools in North Carolina

Culinary arts degrees focus on the art of cooking; they help students develop and hone skills in food preparation and develop a solid understanding of business practices and health standards. Graduates can pursue a variety of cooking positions including head cooks, sous chefs and pastry chefs. North Carolina has a variety of culinary arts schools in all regions of the state.
  1. Central Area

    • Wake Technical Community College is situated in Raleigh. Its culinary technology department offers career-based education at the certificate and Associate of Applied Science degree levels. Areas of study include culinary technology, baking and pastry arts, restaurant management, hotel management and hotel and restaurant management technology. The programs feature low student teacher ratios and focus on theoretical knowledge and practical applications. Graduates of the culinary technology programs are eligible for certification from the American Culinary Federation.

      Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro offers a Natural Chef Culinary Program that grants a Natural Chef Culinary Arts certificate. The mission of the program is to provide a curriculum that enables students to gain know-how to pursue a lifestyle that is naturally sustainable and nutritional. The program promotes the use of natural, organic and whole ingredients from local sources. Students are able to select the full-time or part-time program. Both programs require at least 100 hours of internship experiences at an approved business.

    Southern Area

    • The Art Institute of Charlotte is located in the southern area of Charlotte. It provides culinary programs that focus on enabling students to develop real-world skills by participating in hands-on experiences. It offers associate degree and bachelor's degree programs in culinary arts and culinary arts management.

      Johnson and Wales University is located in the northern part of Charlotte. Its College of Culinary Arts was developed using input from the industry and it focuses on enabling students to gain a solid understanding of classic culinary methods, nutritional analysis and global trends. It provides small class sizes to promote one-on-one interaction among students and faculty and all programs require internship opportunities to enable students to gain practical work experience. The college offers associate and bachelor's degree programs in baking and pastry arts, culinary arts, baking and pastry arts and food service management and culinary arts and food service management.

    Western Area

    • Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in Asheville offers Associate of Applied Science degrees in two fields: culinary technology and baking and pastry arts. The programs focus on strong theoretical knowledge, professionalism and practical application to enable students to meet the necessary standards established by the culinary industry. The American Culinary Federation accredits both programs and graduates are eligible to obtain certification from the organization.

    Northern Area

    • Wilkes Community College is based out of Wilkesboro and it offers Associate of Applied Science degrees in culinary technology and baking and pastry arts and a line cook certificate. The culinary technology and baking and pastry arts programs provide students with specific education to work as culinary professionals in many different food service settings. Graduates with an associate degree are eligible for certification from the American Culinary Federation. The certificate program focuses on basic culinary skills and sanitation and safety.
