Engineering Doctorate Degrees

The United States contains dozens of colleges which offer advanced degrees in engineering, yet a select few are consistently ranked the best. Most colleges require a student to have attained a master's in engineering or a related field prior to being accepted into a Ph.D. program. Before choosing an engineering school, students must look at the cost, location and programs offered at each institution.
  1. Univeristy of California, Berkeley

    • The University of California, Berkeley has had consistent high rankings for their Ph.D. programs. In 2010, the National Research Council ranked the engineering doctoral program among the top 10 nationally. U.C Berkeley offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering (Ph.D) which is a research and analysis degree in the engineering sciences. To be admitted into the doctoral program at U.C Berkeley, students must have completed a Master of Science degree in civil engineering.

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers numerous types of Ph.D. engineering degrees. Types of engineering doctorates offered at MIT include aeronautics and astronautics, biochemical and biological, environmental, civil and computer science. MIT graduate students work closely with the government and private sectors using cutting edge research techniques. A recent U.S Army-funded project led MIT students to create a tougher body armor derived from the Senegal Bichir fish.

    Stanford University

    • Stanford University in California is well known for its research in bioengineering, environmental studies and nanotechnologies. The Stanford School of Engineering offers doctorates in nine separate categories, including bioengineering and mechanical engineering. The engineering department includes 240 faculty members and more than 4,000 students. Members of different engineering departments often collaborate with each other to accomplish their research.

    Universtity of Michigan

    • The University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, not far from Detroit. Well known for its research, the University of Michigan's student research teams have won awards for their innovative use of solar power. The school of engineering has 13 separate departments, all which offer doctoral degrees. Some of the departments include biological, chemical and mechanical engineering.
