After initial training in basic concepts and materials, students go on to majors in painting, textile and wood design, among others. This program is more than 30 years old and involves a multidisciplinary curriculum that takes students beyond their chosen major. The emphasis is on understanding the effects of graphic design on the world. The students develop a portfolio that enables them to gain entrance into professional practice. Graduates have gone on to large and small design offices, in-house corporate creative services, government, cultural and entertainment sectors, as well as teaching positions.

This school has an "in-residence" classroom structure and features programs in architecture, art and design, landscape architecture, graphic design and industrial design. It offers access to permanent studio space 24 hours a day, and students can display their work through the Downtown Raleigh Fish Market, a student-run art gallery. For those who want to study abroad, there are many opportunities for doing so, and nearly half the students take advantage of this option prior to graduation.

Part of a system of schools, the Art Institute of Charlotte offers both an associate of applied science degree and a bachelor of arts degree. Students learn in a hands-on environment, and the school is in session year-round. Graduates with associate degrees are eligible for entry-level jobs in design and layout. The bachelor of arts degree prepares students for entry-level graphic design positions, as well as jobs as computer artists and production artists.
