Schools With Phlebotomy Technician Programs in California

In the state of California, phlebotomists must receive certification from the California Department of Public Health before working with patients. One aspect of the requirements for this professional credentialing is the completion of a state-approved phlebotomy technician program. A number of schools in California carry such programs, preparing students to perform blood draws for medical testing or blood donation.
  1. Colleges of the Sequoias

    • Located in Visalia, the College of the Sequoias is a public institution approximately 40 miles southeast of Fresno. The college offers a state-approved certificate program in phlebotomy. Among the topics covered in the coursework are medical terminology, circulatory system anatomy, infection control, transporting and storing specimens and quality control. Students gain practice drawing blood from one another and also receive 56 hours of clinical training, working with actual patients. The college allows students to take all three courses at once in one semester or to take classes individually for three semesters. Before completing the clinical training component, students must pass a criminal background check. Federal financial aid is available for eligible students.

    Emsta College

    • Established in 2005, Emsta College is a private institution in Santee, approximately 18 miles northeast of San Diego. The college's state-approved phlebotomy technician program requires 120 hours of daylight, full-time study to complete. Students can complete all of the classroom and clinical work within two and one-half weeks. To enroll in the program, students must be 18 years of age, show proof of citizenship and hold a high school diploma or GED, valid medical insurance and CPR certification. Students must also pass an admissions test, physical examination and a criminal background check. The school participates in veteran's benefits and Sallie Mae private student loan programs.

    Institute of Medical Education

    • The Institute of Medical Education operates branches both in San Jose and Oakland. The private institution offers a state-approved phlebotomy technician program takes 10 weeks to complete and requires 200 hours of classroom training and an internship at local hospitals or clinics, which allows students to perform 50 vein and 10 skin punctures. Students take courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, laboratory safety, basic first aid, medical law and ethics. Admission to the program requires a high school diploma or the equivalent and a physical examinations. All applicants must be 18 years of age and take an admissions test prior to enrollment. Federal financial aid is available for qualified students in the form of loans and grants.
