Medical Schools With International Programs

International programs that are provided through medical schools in the United States offer students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the health-care industry among underdeveloped or developing nations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is an estimated 57 countries with a shortage of physicians, nurses and midwives as of 2006. The objective of many of these international programs is to raise awareness among future health-care professionals.
  1. Georgetown University

    • The Georgetown University School of Medicine, located in Washington, D.C., maintains the tradition of "cura personalis", meaning to care for the social, psychological and spiritual aspects of an individual in addition to the physical body. The school emphasizes research, as there are over 400 working scientists employed in the field of clinical research working on more than 300 clinical trials as of 2009. The research focuses on child health and development, cancer, neuroscience and global health. The international programs attract students who wish to practice medicine in underdeveloped countries. They are offered as course electives in which students travel abroad to one of over 20 countries across five continents to experience first-hand medical care with the supervision of professors and other medical professionals. Programs are available to fourth-year medical students for either a duration of four to eight weeks or six to eight weeks.
