RN Refresher Courses in Pennsylvania

Registered nurses who have been out of practice for an extended length of time may want to participate in an RN refresher course before re-entering the workforce. These courses help nurses to build clinical skills, remember vital medical information and increase professional confidence. Many schools and universities across Pennsylvania offer refresher programs to individuals who wish to restart a nursing career.
  1. Eastern University

    • The Eastern University's School of Nursing offers individuals who hold a valid, current RN license in Pennsylvania the opportunity to refresh theoretical and clinical health care skills that may have been lost during an extended absence from practice. This six-week program consists of a two-day-a-week training schedule. The first day of each week's curriculum consists of classroom-based theory and application lessons. The second day is hands-on clinical training in the nearby Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. Classes form twice a year, during the spring and the fall. No financial aid is available for the refresher program, and all students must pay the total amount before beginning classes.

    Community College of Allegheny County

    • Pittsburgh's Community College of Allegheny County provides RNs who have been out of the health-care workplace for an extended length of time with the opportunity to refresh basic nursing skills. The RN/LPN refresher course begins in September and runs through the beginning of December. Class meets four to five days per week and includes clinical and classroom training. Students must hold a current, valid nursing license before registering for this class. and all students must attend an orientation session before the beginning of the semester. Coursework covers a variety of health care and nursing topics, such as body systems, IV therapy, legal and ethical issues and specialty areas of nursing, such as maternity and psychiatric practice.

    University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown

    • The Fast Track Back Program at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown offers current Pennsylvania RNs the chance to complete a refresher course in nursing practice and theory. This six-week course is intended for registered nurses who have been out of practice for a lengthy period of time. Students must complete 30 hours of classroom and simulation lab training as well as 75 hours of clinical practicum. Classes meet once a week in Pittsburgh. Clinical sites are offered near Johnstown at Conemaugh's Memorial Medical Center or in Pittsburgh area hospitals. Students may choose from among the sites. A negative TB test, current CPR certification, physical exam, health insurance and proof of course payment are required before beginning the refresher program.
