BCIT Nursing Courses

BCIT stands for the British Columbia Institute of Technology. It is a university located in Burnaby, British Columbia, on the western coast of Canada. It is one of the country's largest universities and serves approximately 50,000 students as of 2011. As the name implies the school's focus is on technology.   1. Critical Care Nursing Specialty

    • The critical care nursing specialty provides training to nurses to work with patients who are suffering from trauma or a severe illness. This 27-credit program covers courses on introduction to critical care nursing, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, critical care nursing theory, critical care nursing clinical, and critical care clinical. Graduates of this course will work in ICUs (intensive care units), cardiac surgical units, and cardiac care units. The 2011 tuition fee ranges from $222 and $1,009 per course. The program takes two years to complete.

    Emergency Nursing Specialty

    • The emergency nursing specialty provides students with the knowledge, leadership and ability to work in emergency settings in rural to urban places. Courses under this specialty program includes dysrhythmia interpretation and management, emergency nursing theory, emergency nursing clinical, emergency nursing and mental health, and independent study in specialty nursing. The cost is $222 to $1,009 per course as of 2011.

    High Acuity Nursing Specialty

    • The high acuity nursing specialty program is suitable for registered nurses who are practicing in acute care. Graduates of this program work with acutely ill adults who are hospitalized. Courses under this specialty study include dysrhythmia interpretation and management, high acuity special nursing theory, high acuity specialty nursing independent study, teaching and learning in specialty nursing, and the critical phase of acute care. The tuition fee per course is between $222 and $1,009 as of 2011.

    Neonatal Nursing Specialty

    • Neonatal nursing involves caring for newborn babies for the first 28 days. In addition to caring for babies, neonatal nurses can also give support to families and caregivers and may also attend the needs of premature or sick babies. The courses for this specialty program include neonatal theory, neonatal clinical, neonatal preceptorship in neonatal nursing, neonatal acute care, neonatal respiratory care and neonatal resuscitation. This 27-credit course costs $222 to $1,009 per course as of 2011.
