Nail Tech Colleges

According to the American Association of Cosmetology, personal beauty is a thriving business. In a 2006 study, it was shown that roughly 75 percent of salons that were hiring that year were unable to find skilled workers to fill slots. The void has only increased. Surveys conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that job opportunities under the beauty and style umbrella will grow about 20 percent by 2018. Once nail technicians complete training, they can decide among a bevy of job possibilities, from manicurists and pedicurists to spa and salon owners to cruise ship beauticians.
  1. Aveda Institutes

    • Aveda Institute also teaches students about equipment sanitation and storage.

As of July 2010, there are 30 Aveda schools in 21 states throughout the country. In addition to offering classes in massage therapy and hair cutting, Aveda institutions train students in manicures and pedicures, proper equipment usage, cleaning and storage techniques. During the 300-hour training sessions, beauticians study histology -- the study of human tissue -- as well as anatomy so that they can provide massage techniques while doing nails. Aveda also offers scholarships to prospective students. To apply, future stylists need only fill out an application, write a 200 word essay, provide a recommendation letter as well as before and after pictures to show their skills at transforming looks.

    The Academy of Nail Design

    • Nail technicians can be educated online.

Nail technicians can acquire degrees online. The Academy of Nail Design certifies anyone over the age of 18 who is unable to attend classes. Instead of classes, self-motivated students will learn through modules, study guides that are between 8 to 10 pages. Modules are broken down into such categories as Nail Anatomy, Client Assessment and Salon and Chemical Safety. Test taking is done online. Once students successfully complete 10 modules, they are awarded certificates of completion.
