List of American Universities in Europe

American universities in Europe provide an option for American students hoping to study abroad in a European country, or for any student looking for a college education that is modeled after American institutions of higher learning. Many of these schools are accredited in the United States, and some are members of the Association of American International Colleges and Universities, an organization that seeks to promote the quality of American institutions abroad.
  1. American College of Greece

    • The American College of Greece is the oldest and largest American university in Europe. Located in Athens, it is accredited in the United States by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, but is not accredited in Greece as a result of a government restriction on recognizing private universities. With more than 4,000 students, the school has undergraduate and graduate programs and offers BA, BS, MS and MBA degrees.

    American University of Paris

    • Founded in 1962, the American University of Paris is among the oldest American universities in Europe. This institution has over 900 students and is accredited in the U.S. by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Approximately 35 percent of the students are American, and most students pursue a three- or four-year undergraduate degree. It offers 17 majors for undergraduates and nine graduate programs.

    John Cabot University

    • Located in Rome, John Cabot University offers undergraduate bachelor of arts degrees. This university offers a traditional American four-year liberal arts education to a student body of approximately 800. Named after an Italian explorer known for his voyages to North America, John Cabot boasts a faculty of more than 100 multilingual professors, and its accreditation from the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools was reaffirmed in 2008.

    Richmond University

    • With over 1,500 students from approximately 100 countries, Richmond University--also known as The American University in London--is one of the largest and most well-known American universities in Europe. The university, which is accredited in both the U.K. and the U.S., offers two campuse: First- and second-year students reside at the Richmond Hill campus, while the rest are situated at a campus in central London.
