Masters Programs in Theatre

Choosing a master's program in theater is an important decision that can influence what you will do with your degree. Options include teaching theater and auditioning in major cities. You should pick a master's program in theater that is compatible with the plans you have for where you want to live and with the amount you can spend on tuition. A good master's program in theater will give you the foundations to improve your skills and the connections to find a job after graduation. New York University, University of Maryland and University of California at San Diego are top schools that offer you different types of experiences. Studying at New York University puts you in the midst of a city full of theatre events. If you prefer studying in a smaller city that is near large audition areas (Washington DC and Los Angeles), University of Maryland and University of California at San Diego may be ideal for you.
  1. New York University Steinhardt

    • New York University (NYU) Steinhardt offers students the opportunity to earn a master's of music and specialize in musical theater. The master's of music with a specialization in musical theater helps students toward careers as professional performers. Students can also enroll in a program in educational theater with the opportunity to gain teacher certification for all grades, grades 7 to 12, colleges and communities, and dual certifications in English or social studies. Upon completion of the education program, students will be prepared to teach in the state of New York because the program adheres to requirements by the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts.

    • University of Maryland offers a master's of arts in theatre and performance studies and a master's of fine arts (MFA) in performance. According to the University of Maryland, each program "intertwines learning and professional experiences." Students rave that the best part of going to the school for theater here is the important guest speakers. In the past, these have included Michael Dove, artistic director of Forum Theatre and Christopher Henley, artistic director of Washington Shakespeare Company. All applicants must submit three letters of recommendation and a writing sample. The MFA in performance requires an audition. The University of Maryland Department of Theatre and Performance Studies is only accepting applicants for the PhD in 2010-2011.
