How to Explain SOP Achievements

A statement of purpose (SOP) is a short document required by universities and graduate schools during the admission process. The SOP gives the applicant an opportunity to describe past achievements and career goals. Using the SOP, an applicant explains the choice of a particular field and university. Admission commissions use an SOP to assess the abilities, interests and aims of a prospective student. An SOP also helps schools to choose the right candidate from the applicants list.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the record of your academic, professional and personal achievements in the form of a list that includes information about a date or period, exact nature or essence of the achievement and materials such as certificates, diplomas, samples of work and other evidence that can help better explain your achievements. Sort out the list by the type of achievement --- for example, acquired skills, awards, completed projects and participation in social activities --- to make explanation of your overall experience and resulting achievements easier.

    • 2

Specify your contribution that led to the achievement using expressive words reflecting exact responsibilities. Words such as "wrote," "installed" or "designed" clearly explain the nature of an achievement. Avoid vague, passive verbs like "used," "participated" or "was part of" that do not show the degree of your involvement. Describe the circumstances and challenges that should have been considered or overcome to achieve the desired results with precise statements --- for example, "low sales figures," "unsatisfactory quality of customer service" and "product recall."

    • 3

Use real numbers and measures from your record to explain the value and impact of your achievement. Indicate what achievements advanced your career or resulted in personal rewards. Mention the details of a particular promotion and size of a bonus. Describe how the achievement made a difference and influenced your teammates and organization where you worked and underscore the specific relationships between your achievement and the effect it produced.
