How to Take the GRE for a Degree in Social Work

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required by many graduate schools before students can be admitted to a program for an advanced degree. The GRE test is administered in every state. The GRE contains three sections: analytical, verbal and quantitative. All three sections are designed to predict a student's potential for success in a graduate school program. Students are scored between 200 and 800 points. The higher the student's score, the more likely he will be accepted into a graduate program. Study and preparation can help a student score well on the GRE.

Instructions

    • 1

Register for the GRE test, and get test preparation materials from the Educational Testing Systems (ETS) website. Preparation is critical to scoring well on the GRE test. After prospective graduate students register for the test with Educational Testing Systems, they will be provided free test preparation software for download or on CD-ROMs. Additional test preparation materials include computer general tests, analytical writing topics, math reviews and test tutorials. Registered students also receive free test taking strategies on CD-ROM.

    • 2

Study individual subject areas by downloading free PDF study materials from the ETS website. Prospective graduate students who may be weak in one area and want to improve their scores may download free study materials by subject. Study the materials thoroughly, and take practice tests on each section before taking the GRE test.

    • 3

Take practice tests. Use a timer during your practice test sessions, because some sections of the GRE test are timed. The GRE is a long test that can last more than three hours. Practice will help the hopeful graduate student build up endurance in preparation for test day. Practice the sections of the test that are administered by computer using the simulated tests provided through Educational Testing Systems. Take practice tests under conditions to simulate actual testing conditions, if possible.
