Grad School Interview Tips

Graduate school requires intense study, and can take your education to the next level. Before you attend, however, you need to gain acceptance. If you are considering attending graduate school after college, an interview process may be necessary. In order to better prepare yourself for the interview, some easy-to-remember tips can help you through the process.
  1. Admissions

    • Much like a job interview, walking into a graduate school interview without practicing several questions and scenarios can leave you unprepared and vulnerable to tough questions. Depending on the degree you are pursuing, questions could general or industry specific, such as "How would you control the work flow of a small business?" or "What would you do if a patient did not have health insurance?" Prepare for questions asking about your long-term objectives with the school, why the program should select you as a candidate, what is your greatest weakness and strength and the infamous, "tell me about yourself."

    Ask Questions

    • While the interview process is designed much like an interrogation, interviewers want to have a conversation with you and want you to get to know the program. Ask questions about the faculty, training facilities, awards and recognition the school has received, and more. Asking questions makes you seem more interested in the program and will separate yourself from other candidates.

    Dress to Impress

    • Depending on the number of candidates before you, you could be waiting for your interview all day. Dress in dark, conservative, professional attire, but make sure you stay comfortable. Much like a job interview, your attire plays a big factor in a first impression. Wearing revealing clothing or clothing with vivid colors can distract the interviewer from what you have to say.

    Follow Up

    • Send a follow up or thank you letter to each person you interview with. Not only does this letter serve to keep you in their thoughts, it can show you are still interested. If you are interviewing before a board of faculty, be sure to catch each of their names when you walk in or before you leave. If they are important members of the graduate program, they will generally have their names listed in the graduate program faculty list on the school's website. Much like a follow up letter for a job interview, thank them for taking the time to meet with you and conduct the interview.
