How to Explain Compound Words

Compound words are a basic concept in the English language, and though people use them every day, children and those learning the English language may not grasp the concept. A compound word is a word made up of two or more words put together. For most people, the easiest way to learn compound words is through visualization. If adults and children can see single words turn into a joint word, they find the concept easier to understand.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a list of words that are compounds on the white or black board. Examples include dragonfly, birthday, gumdrop, guidebook, sunshine, outrun, doorknob, doorman, stepson, applesauce and armchair.

    • 2

Draw a line in the compound words to show how they can be divided into two words. For example, with "herself," draw a line between "her" and "self."

    • 3

List a variety of words on the board that can be made into compound words, and ask students to match the words to form compound words. Explain that you do not change the words to create a compound word.
