How to Graph a Compound Variable

Algebra is a complex yet elegant form of mathematics. It may be the bane of high school and university students worldwide, but studying algebra helps develop critical thinking skills and has many practical applications as well. Compound functions are functions that are operated on by another function. Typically, they have the form f(g(x)). The inner function is calculated first. You can graph the variables in a compound function using a graphing calculator or manually.

Instructions

  1. Graphing Calculator

    • 1

Open the "Compound Function" feature on your calculator.

    • 2

      Input the inner equation, g(x).

    • 3

      Input the outer equation, f(x).

    • 4

      Select "Graph."

    Graphing Algebraically

    • 5

Plug in a value for the variable x in the inner equation, g(x).

    • 6

Calculate g(x) based on the value and then input that answer into the outer equation, f(x).

    • 7

Calculate f(x) and plot the result. For example, if you use x=1 and get f(g(x))=0, plot (0,1).

    • 8

Continue inputting values in this manner until you have calculated enough points to graph the compound variable.
