How do I Solve Math Test Questions on the Compass Test?

The Computer Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System test, otherwise known as the Compass test, is traditionally given to entry-level college students to determine whether they should be placed in remedial, regular or advanced classes. The math portion of the compass test covers five areas, including algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, college algebra and trigonometry. There is no time limit for the math portion of the exam, so take your time; if you rush you could be placed in a class that's wasting your time and ability.

Know your stuff. Take advantage of the numerous practice math Compass tests available on the Internet. Grade yourself to determine your strengths and weaknesses, and then study the concepts you need to improve upon. Continue to take practice tests so you can monitor your progress.

Take your time. Read the entire question, more than once if necessary. Make sure you understand what the test is asking before you begin to prepare your answer. The Compass test is not timed, so there is no penalty for taking all the time you need. Understand the way the test works: the test begins with algebra questions and will either get harder or easier based on your answers. Each time you stop answering questions correctly and consistently, the level of difficulty falls.

Copy the question over onto your scratch sheet of paper. You might know (or think you know) some of the answers off the top of your head. Do not fall into the trap of being over confident. Rushing through the test might land you in a math class that doesn't reflect your ability. Go through the steps on the scratch sheet and solve the problem. Compare your answer with the list of multiple choice answers and choose the appropriate letter. Type in your answer and hit the "Enter" key. The test will ask you if you're sure of your choice; indicate "yes" by hitting the "Enter" key again.

Answer each question. According to Compass-Test-Questions.com, you will not be penalized for guessing. Don't skip problems; it will make it difficult for colleges and universities to gauge your ability.

Raise your hand if you have any questions about a problem before you attempt to solve it. Quietly wait for the proctor to come over to you; ask your question in a low voice without disturbing the rest of the room.
