How to Do Two Column Notes

Two-column note taking helps you keep long lists of detailed information clear and organized. Two-column notes are useful for organizing complex technical information, historical reference dates or chapter-based study and can organize information in a way that makes your notes easy to study and information easier to find. The best way to find out if using two-column notes works for you is trying them out for a day.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the date and course title at the top of a blank page.

    • 2

Draw a vertical line down the page to create two columns. Divide the page so 1/4 of the page is on the left and 3/4 is on the right.

    • 3

Label the left column "Topic." Label the right column "Details."

    • 4

Take notes as usual, but use the left column for big ideas and the right column for information that pertains to each idea. For example, you would write "Causes of the Civil War" on the left. You would list the causes given by your teacher or your book on the right.
