Topics include narratology, poetics, literary semantics, fictional worlds, representation, the history of literary theory, and interpretations of text. Students can complete the academic portion of this program in two years. During the third and fourth years, students serve as teaching assistants, and in the fifth and sixth years, the student will prepare for the dissertation.

Leland Stanford Junior University, more commonly known as Stanford University, offers a Ph.D. program in comparative literature with an emphasis on critical and cultural analysis. Students take courses in three different fields of comparative literature, one of which must be in their native language. Students typically complete this program in four or five years. Course include literature as performance; the literature of the Americas; philosophy and literature; literature and society in Africa and the Caribbean; ethnicity and literature; and Afghanistan: literature and history.

The University of Colorado at Boulder offers a Ph.D. program in comparative literature that accepts students with a BA or MA in comparative literature or a related discipline. Students admitted into the doctoral program are required to take two foreign language courses at a graduate level. Students who enter the program with a master's degree in comparative literature will complete the program in four years while students with a degree in another field will take five years to complete the program. Students entering directly into the program after obtaining their bachelor's degree will require six years of study.
