Capella aims to educate students on the the analysis, strategic planning, organizational change, ethics, law, and quality improvement needed to run public and private health care facilities. Students focus on their online coursework as well as field research. Twenty-nine courses are necessary for graduation. Three-day residencies help students gain experience in the field and seven optional concentration areas of study are available.

Walden University has two models for its online Ph.D in human services with a heath care administration specialization. The two models are the mixed-format and the course-based format. The mixed-format consists of online coursework, research papers and independent research through knowledge area modules while the course-based model provides online discussions with peers. With both approaches, Walden students complete 98 to 101 credits with four residencies totaling 16 credit hours and a dissertation that is 20 credit hours, five each term.
