Student Hardship Grants

If you are ready to go to college but simply cannot afford it, apply for hardship grants or scholarships. These funding resources differ from student loans because they do not have to be paid back; they are set aside under the umbrella of "disadvantaged" student financial aid. According to Students.gov, there are hundreds of general, school-specific and discipline-specific need-based grants and scholarships available.
  1. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)

    • If you are pursuing a career in nursing or any other medical profession and do not have the necessary funds due to financial hardship, you can apply for need-based aid through the financial aid department at your school. The school must be fully accredited for teaching medicine, and you must be a citizen or legal resident of the U.S. with a financial profile that fits within the "disadvantaged background" parameters set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

    • This need-based scholarship program is for students who intend to pursue a career in public service. If your career goal is to become a government employee or civic leader, you may be eligible for up to $30,000 toward your graduate degree. To obtain a Truman scholarship, you must compete with other applicants with a high GPA, record of extracurricular achievements and a series of interviews. You do not need to prove a history of hardship, but you must prove that you would be unable to fund your graduate education yourself.
