Discuss your major and how you plan to use your college degree, as well as your financial need and your background. Advisors will use this information to find scholarships that will fit your plans and goals.
Contact churches and non-profit organizations. Many churches and non-profits have funds available to help students attend college. Fulfill all the requirements (applications, essays, and financial need forms) and find out what they have available to you. Some may ask that you volunteer with them. Consider this practical experience that will help you once you are out of college in the "real world."
Contact companies and businesses. Scholarships are available from all sorts of companies, large and small. Start in your local area and branch out to national and international companies. Not all companies will require that you work for them now or in the future.
Find a philanthropist. Wealthy individuals often help students by providing scholarships. This can be a tax write-off for them. They set up private foundations that give out scholarships. There can be many requirements to receive a scholarship through a philanthropist; be sure you meet all of those requirements before asking for the funds.
Research your family tree. Scholarships can be given away according to your race and nationality. Being a minority isn't necessary. Many scholarships are available to students simply because their family is from a certain country. Provide proof of this when you apply for scholarships.
Know your personal history. If you are an orphan, survived abuse or even a child of divorce, there scholarships available to you. Many difficulties you have faced in the past may help you obtain scholarships. Don't be shy about your past; this can cost you thousands of dollars in scholarships. Be honest and provide proof when asked.
