How to Get a Pin for FAFSA

When filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to receive financial aid for college you must also fill out a PIN application. The PIN is a four-digit identifier that allows you to complete the FAFSA, access personal records, make changes to your account and electronically sign any other FAFSA documents. In order to apply for a PIN, you must enter personal information in order to prove that you appropriately identified yourself.

      Go to the Federal Student Aid PIN website. Click on the "Apply Now" button.

      Click on the "Next" button to begin the PIN application process. Enter you Social Security number and then re-enter it in the appropriate text boxes.

      Enter your last name, first name, middle initial and date of birth into the remaining top text boxes.

      Enter your mailing address, city, state and zip code into the appropriate fields. Enter and re-enter your email address. Select a challenge question from the drop-down menu and then enter the answer for you question you selected.

      Enter and re-enter a four-digit PIN into the text boxes if you want to create your own. Leave the boxes blank if you want a PIN assigned to you. Click on the "Next" button.

      Read through the information on the Submission page and then click on the "Submit" button. Allow time for the PIN to be confirmed, and you will receive an email in the email account you provided. You will then be able to use your PIN.
