How to Get a PIN Number for FAFSA

The four-digit PIN for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) allows you to electronically sign FAFSA documents online. The FAFSA PIN is conditional until your information has been verified by the Social Security Administration, a process that usually takes one to three days. Once the information has been verified, you will be able to access your FAFSA application information, make changes to your application and check the status of your application online. You will also be able to access your information on other federal student aid websites with the same PIN.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Federal Student Aid PIN Website and click on "Apply Now" in the "Apply For A PIN" box (see References). Click on the "NEXT" arrow in the "Apply For A PIN" section.

    • 2

Enter your personal information. You will be required to enter your Social Security number, your full name and your date of birth. In the second section, you will need to enter your mailing address and your email address, along with a challenge question (in case you forget your PIN). You also have the option of creating your own PIN.

    • 3

Determine how you would like to receive your PIN: instantly online, by separate email or by regular mail. Submit your application for a FAFSA PIN.

    • 4

Wait to receive your PIN. If you chose the online option, your PIN will be displayed on the confirmation page. If you opted for email notification, you will receive your PIN within minutes. If you decided to wait for regular mail, your PIN should arrive in seven to 10 days.
