The University of California at Irvine has a Ph.D. program in biological sciences that has an emphasis on cellular molecular biosciences. Students have the option of choosing between six departments: biological chemistry; microbiology and molecular genetics; developmental and cell biology; pathology and laboratory medicine; physiology and biophysics; and molecular biology and biochemistry. The program typically can be completed in six years and students will research areas that include virology; mechanisms of gene expressions; biology of infectious disease; developmental biology and genetics; molecular neurobiology; and biomedical informatics.

Stanford University offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree program in biology that is designed to address all levels of biological questions. Some of the research aspects include topics like ecology, evolution and population biology; integrative, organismal and marine biology; and cell, developmental, molecular and plant biology. In addition to the research aspects in which students can participate, students also teach some lecture courses as well as laboratory courses in this program. Ph.D. students take advanced molecular biology; advanced genetics; field studies in earth systems; and DNA repair and genomic stability. They also take courses that include life and death of proteins; human physiology; and the human genome and disease.

The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree program in biology. The program is designed to prepare students who are self-reliant to become scholars who are able to acquire and assimilate the information that their career or research demands require. The program typically is expected to be completed in four years from the start date. Ph.D. students take three core courses, which are scientific reasoning and logic; research topics; and scientific exposition and ethics. The specialized disciplines in biology courses last for four weeks in length while the courses in topics in biology last for an intensive one-week session. In total, there are 13 lecture courses that students are required to complete in this program.
