To pursue a degree in interior design, students have many options. At four-year colleges throughout the country, many schools offer bachelor of fine art degrees in interior design. For students who want to complete their training faster, an online program may be an option. For a more specialized education, consider a design school such as the Fashion Institute of Technology--State University in New York City or the Florence Design Academy in Italy. When choosing a program, make sure the school is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. This will ensure that the school has an acceptable curriculum, according to the School of Interior Design website.
Every design school has different requirements for their programs. At the Fashion Institute of Technology, high school students must apply to the associate's degree program before working toward a bachelor's degree. At the Interior Designers Institute in southern California, students must complete the institute's certificate program before applying to a bachelor's degree program. Most schools require a portfolio with art work such as paintings or drawings done by the student. Other requirements range from transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, essays and letters of recommendation.
Once you have completed your interior design degree at a four-year school, design school or online program, it is time to gain experience. Internships are an often effective way to break into the industry and network with professionals. The next step will be to take the interior design examination. The National Council of Interior Design Qualification offers the exam twice a year. Passing the exam will grant you greater credibility within the interior design field. After passing the exam, designers must become licensed through the NCIDQ. License requirements vary by state, so check the NCDIQ website for more information.
