How to Make a Simple Bibliography

After a lot of hard work, you've finally finished writing your paper. Now it's time to put the finishing touches on it. An essential step in the writing of any paper is the proper citation of sources. Without a proper bibliography, sources referenced in the paper become sources plagiarized. The process of making a bibliography is simple and it is a step that should never be skipped when writing an academic paper. These steps use MLA formatting.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your document. MLA format calls for 1-inch margins all around and double spacing. Type "Works Cited" at the top of the page and center it.

    • 2

Gather your sources. Your works cited page should list every source you referenced in your paper. Sources can come in any format, but are most commonly books or websites. You will need to glean certain information from your sources such as the title, author or authors, year and city of publication, date of publication and medium.

    • 3

Format your source list. Bibliography entries must follow a strict format. For example, the format for a book source is:
Last Name, First Name of Author. Title of Book (in italics). Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication.

The format for a web source is:
Last Name, First Name of Webpage Author. "Title of Specific Webpage." Title of Overall Website (in italics). Date Updated. Medium of Publication. Date Accessed.

The format for other types of sources can be found online.

List your formatted sources in your bibliography. Sources should be listed alphabetically by author's last name. If the author's name is unavailable, the title should be used to alphabetize the source. The source list should be double spaced. Sources that extend beyond one line of the page should be indented by one tab on any subsequent lines.

Print your bibliography and attach it as the last page of your essay.
