Clinical Psychology Programs in Canada

There are many Canadian universities with well-respected clinical psychology graduate programs. However, when researching universities to which you may apply, pay special attention to each program's focus and organization. Ultimately, make sure the program excels in the area or areas that interest you. The university's location and size are also aspects that should be considered because they will likely affect your happiness at your chosen university.
  1. University of Victoria Clinical Psychology Program

    • The University of Victoria's clinical psychology program offers both Masters and Doctoral degree and is certified by the American Psychological Association and the Canadian Psychological Association. Funding is not guaranteed, but upon entry the program will inform you of any assistantship or scholarship eligibility. This program subscribes to the Boulder scientist-practitioner training model, which focuses equally on science and research, application and practice, and integrating science and practice. The Clinical Psychology program has core courses that all graduate students must take, but in addition to the core program students choose to emphasize in either Clinical Life Span Psychology or Clinical Neuropsychology. Students work on research outside the classroom throughout their schooling and also gain supervised clinical experience working in the University's Psychology Clinic, at practicum settings in the community, and through a one-year internship or residency. As of July 2010, the University of Victoria website promotes that 100% of the university's clinical psychology program work in direct client service.

The university's Center for Mental Health Research is a learning tool for students, allowing them to perform clinical training and gain experience working alongside faculty. The center is also the site for skills and academic courses, as well as research. As of July 2010, this program guarantees $19,000 per year for doctoral candidates, for up to four years. This package includes tuition, which is just over $7,000 per year, and a housing stipend.

    • Queens University provides a very small and selective clinical psychology graduate program that receives approximately 110 applications yearly, of which around only five are admitted. This program is accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association. However, students are expected to complete both degrees at Queens. This university's Clinical Psychology program focuses on scientific training and it strives to create psychologists who will make new contributions to the profession, not just regurgitate existing knowledge. However, this clinical psychology program stresses assessment, treatment, and research by providing students with practical experience in the university's Psychology Clinic, thesis research, and collaborative research opportunities. As of July 2010, the program website boasts that in the past five years all clinical psychology students who have applied for internships have been placed and graduates work in many different capacities and environments. Queens University's department website states, as of July 2010, that the program promises doctoral students funding of $18,000 and tries to fund master's students as well.
