University of South Dakota offers a bachelor's in alcohol and drug studies. Students can pursue this four-year degree on campus or online. Courses include study of alcohol use and abuse, study of drug use and abuse, alcohol and drug group interaction and ethical and legal issues in the substance abuse profession. Students must specialize in treatment or prevention. Two courses from the specialization area are required for completion.

Ohio Christian University has a bachelor's program in substance abuse counseling, which also encompasses degrees in drug and alcohol counseling. The program prepares students to incorporate Christian principles into their personal lives and was designed specifically for working adults. Courses are taken one at a time, thereby requiring students to meet on the campus only once per week. Textbooks are mailed directly to students’ homes. Courses include introduction to substance abuse, prevention strategies, psychopharmacology of drugs, ethical and legal issues in counseling, family dynamics in substance abuse and spiritual dimensions of illness and recovery.

Manchester Community College offers an associate degree in drug and alcohol rehabilitation counseling. Some graduates go on to earn a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field. Courses can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis, and include public health issues, addiction counseling, group counseling therapy and techniques, biology of addiction, abnormal psychology, pathways to personal growth and introduction to the mental health system.
