Midwifery Programs in Texas

The Texas Midwifery Board notes on its website that citizens in the state have long utilized midwives to assist with labor, delivery and postpartum care. Since 1983, Texas has regulated the profession of midwifery and required midwives to be licensed. There are various programs available in Texas that train aspiring midwives with respect to pregnancy, labor and delivery. These programs prepare graduates to pass a state examination and become licensed in Texas.
  1. Maternidad La Luz

    • Maternidad La Luz offers one-year and three-year programs for aspiring midwives. The programs combine lectures with clinical experience. Completion of the one-year program is sufficient preparation for Texas licensure. The three-year program provides students with advanced clinical training. An available residency program gives licensed midwives the opportunity to earn a stipend and tuition waiver while completing the three-year program. The midwifery curriculum consists of an introduction to midwifery as a career, followed by modules in prenatal, labor and postpartum care. Students also take classes in anatomy, chemistry, well-woman care and prenatal complications. Applicants need to be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED. They must have completed a basic anatomy course, and also need to have reliable transportation and a driver's license. Students at Maternidad La Luz must be able to speak Spanish, as the majority of the clients served by the clinic are Spanish-speaking.
