Colleges to Become a Certified Electrician in Iowa

Certified electricians install and repair appliances; they also maintain electrical systems. Various training centers and community colleges in Iowa offer certificate programs and apprenticeship opportunities in electronics. Prospective students should have a high school diploma or equivalent. The associate degree in electronics will prepare graduates for entry-level careers in the field. To become certified electricians, candidates can take a proctored online examination, which is administered by Electronics Technicians Association (ETA), a well-known certification program.

    • Based in Cedar Rapids, Kirkwood Community College was established in 1966. Prospective students can choose from over 120 different career programs. In addition to providing classroom instruction, the college also offers online courses in select programs. The Industrial Technologies department provides a variety of vocational training. The electronic engineering technology program is a two-year associate degree course that provides classroom and hands-on instruction in electronics. Graduates from the program will be eligible for employment in a variety of related fields including field-service technician, avionics technician, security systems technician and electronic systems repair technician.

    • Eastern Iowa Community College has campuses in three locations in Iowa. The college offers associate degree and certificate programs in various vocational fields. Prospective students can enroll in short-term certificate training in industrial electricity. The industrial electricity course is a 13.5-credit-hour course; students will learn basic electrical concepts and will be eligible for entry-level electrical careers.

    • The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Iowa offers a four-year electrical engineering course that is designed to provide students with a broad-based training in electronics. Graduates from the program will be well-equipped to find employment at various industries and organizations. In addition to preparing students with the necessary technical skills, the program also offers students the opportunity to obtain a technical entrepreneurship certificate. During the initial stages of their coursework, students will take electrical and computer engineering courses, after which they will select either a computer or electrical track. Course highlights in electrical and computer engineering include introductory physics, engineering math, thermodynamics and electrical engineering seminar.
