It is the oldest of the five federal military academies, and dedicated to the values of duty, honor and country. The United States Naval academy is a fully accredited college that commissions officers into the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps. The Naval academy calls its students midshipmen as opposed to cadets. The school strives to accomplish its mission to develop midshipmen "morally, mentally, and physically."

The United States Coast Guard academy is a four-year, fully accredited college that commissions officers into the U.S. Coast Guard. It is the smallest of the five federal military academies. All cadets must follow the Honor Concept: "Who lives here reveres honor, honors duty." Their official motto is "Scientiæ cedit mare," Latin for "The Sea Yields to Knowledge."

The United States Merchant Marine Academy is a fully accredited college. Unlike the other service academies, however, graduates have more options. After graduation, they must fulfill their service obligation by providing proof of employment with a United States Maritime Administration-approved (MARAD) company annually. This means they can commission in a branch of military or work as civilians in a maritime industry. If the graduate chooses to be a civilian, he must maintain his reserve naval commission for at least eight years.
