After Sputnik was launched in 1957, the United States created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958. This is an important part of American history as it intertwines us with world history.
The United States Army plays an important role in U.S. history. All branches of armed forces are equally important; however, the Army is the most well-known. The individual soldier is the basic building block of the Army, but understanding the basic chain of command within the United States Army can provide a great deal of insight into American history. There is a difference between a squad, a platoon and a company within the Army; however, each must lead into the next. For example, a squad is made up of nine to ten soldiers and is typically commanded by a sergeant or a staff sergeant. A platoon is 16 to 44 soldiers, is led by a lieutenant with an NCO as second in command and consists of two to four squads or sections.
