The Difference in Dietitian and Nutritionist Degrees

"All dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are dietitians," declares the Georgia State University School of Health Professions website. Any person choosing to do so may call himself a nutritionist because the term is unregulated, but a registered dietitian must meet specified requirements.
  1. Registered Dietitian

    • Prerequisites to sit for the Commission on Dietetic Registration examination include a bachelor's degree, completion of the Didactic Program in Dietetics and completion of an approved practice program.

    Nutritionist

    • A person may call herself a nutritionist, advertise herself as a nutritionist or promote herself as a nutritionist without meeting academic or professional requirements in order to do so.

    Advanced Degrees

    • The Simmons School of Health Sciences website states that the term nutritionist is a generic one. However, even its Master of Science in nutrition graduates must complete the additional requirements of the Commission on Dietetic Registration to be considered registered dietitians.
